Good Driving Technique vs Staying the Course
Damn it! Fred Wilson beat me to the punch today with yet another one of his great VC Cliches of the Week.
Re: Bush Speech last night, Fred astutely related the Bush “Let’s Keep Doing Everything the Same” approach to the adage: “You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results”. While Fred attributes this quote to Bliss McCrum when discussing the logic of follow-on financing, I had always thought the original quote was borrowed from Albert Einstein.
My background as a physicist makes me a bit partial to old Albert but, as it turns out, the quote seems to come from old Ben (and who knows where he “borrowed it” from) —
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” — Benjamin Franklin
Another reaction I had to last night’s speech was a flashback to my Driver’s Ed Teacher in High School — a former marine who had finish his tour of duty in ‘Nam to become a combined Phys Ed and Driver’s Ed Teacher at my public high school. Clearly not cut from the same political cloth as I, but even so, I can not imagine him ever telling me to “Stay the Course” without even minor course corrections — even if we were driving down the straightest of highways.
Also I think my post earlier this week on Denial in Politics seems on point as well.

But he doesn't WANT different results. The Iraqi people finally have a taste of freedom and democracy, there are no more rape and torture rooms, the insurgents are being captured and killed. Meanwhile, the rest of the Arab nations that are oppressive leaders realize that we won't turn our backs on them and others know we won't back down from intimidation. So, let's hope for more of the same!!!!
